Search & AI visibility

Found on Google, in Maps,
and in AI answers.

Customers now find businesses through Google, maps, AI summaries and answer engines. The same things help with all of them: clear pages, accurate business facts, and genuinely useful answers.

In plain language

Three acronyms, one foundation.

SEO is the familiar one: helping your pages appear in traditional search results for the things customers type. AEO (answer engine optimisation) is about being the source an answer engine quotes when someone asks a question. GEO (generative engine optimisation) is about being understood and cited accurately by generative AI systems.

They sound different and are sold as different products. In practice they reward the same things: pages that say clearly what you do and where, consistent business information everywhere it appears, content that answers real questions well, and a site that machines can crawl without trouble. Google's own guidance says its generative search features rely on the same foundational search systems as always.

No one can guarantee placement in a search result or an AI-generated answer. Montoya Media improves the content, structure and trust signals these systems can evaluate, and says so plainly.

What a good answer looks like

Be the obvious answer to a specific question.

When a page states the service, the area served, who it is for and how to get in touch, both a customer and an answer engine can use it. Vague pages are skipped by both.

The example is an illustration with a fictional business, not a real search result.

Who repairs commercial walk-in coolers in Henderson?

Example Refrigeration (illustration)

Good questions

Questions about visibility.

Acronyms, guarantees, Google guidance and what is included.

What are SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO (search engine optimisation) improves visibility in traditional search results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation) focus on helping answer engines and generative AI systems understand and cite accurate information about your business. The foundations overlap: useful content, clear structure, crawlability, and trustworthy business signals.

Can you guarantee a ranking or a place in AI answers?

No, and anyone who does is guessing. Montoya Media improves the content, structure and trust signals that search engines and AI systems evaluate. Results depend on competition, your reputation off the website, and how those systems change.

Does Google need special AI markup or an llms.txt file?

Google states that its generative search features rely on the same foundational search systems and that no special markup or llms.txt file is required. Clear, crawlable, expert content and accurate business information matter more than any new file format.

Is this included in a website project?

The foundation is: technical structure, metadata, business schema, service and location pages, and analytics with Search Console. Ongoing content, link building and reporting are part of a care plan or a separate engagement.

What about Google Business Profile?

For a local business it is often the most visible listing you have. Keeping its name, address, phone, hours and categories consistent with the website is part of the visibility foundation, and you are shown how to keep it current.
